Stroke awareness: Comparing Brazil to the rest of the world

Fidel Meira

Hospital Madre Teresa/Hospital Risoleta Tolentino Neves, Brazil

S

troke is one of the main causes of death worldwide and a

leading cause of permanent disability among adults in devel-

oped countries. In Brazil, the incidence of ischemic stroke varies

from 105 to 137/100,000 inhabitants, and patients with stroke

exhibit high prevalence rates of ischemic heart disease, hyper-

tension, and diabetes mellitus. Some studies have shown that

campaigns on television and in printed materials are good tools

to improve the population’s awareness about stroke and the

need to contact emergency services. The correct (and prompt)

recognition of stroke signs has been just as crucial as the ad-

mission to a stroke service to the achievement of better results

in stroke care, including a reduction in mortality and disability.
