Illiac screws in Lumbo-Sacro-Iliac Fixation Lumbosacral Pathologies: Our experience
Vivek Rameshchandra Patel
and
Rahul Gupta
Fortis Hospital, India
Background:
Lumbo-Sacro-Pelvic Fixation may be required
for complex lumbosacral pathologies where L5 or S1 screws
cannot be placed. Iliac screw technique is adopted in treating
certain typical conditions requiring long segment fixation such
as in correction of adult Scoliosis, reduction of high-grade
Spondylolisthesis, Sacral Fractures and surgical treatment of
sacral tumors.
Methods:
We describe our experience at our institution in
which polyaxial pedicle screws construct has been successfully
used.
Results:
No instrumentation failure was noted. Continuity of
spine and pelvis was well established with the instrumentation.
Patients were followed up for 6- 12 months.
Conclusion:
Lumbo-Sacro-Pelvic-Fixation using iliac screw has
been shown to improve biomechanical strength and seems to
provide acceptable clinical result. Further followup studies with
long term clinical outcomes will be recommended
