EPIDERMOLYSIS BULLOSA (EB): A CASE OF A PATIENT FOLLOWED FOR 19 YEARS
Hana Zelenkova
Private Clinic of Dermatovenereology- DOST Svidnik, Slovakia
E
B (Synonyms:“Butterfly children”,“Cotton wool babies”and“Crystal skin children”) is a group of mainly inher-
ited that cause blisters in the skin and mucosal membranes, with an incidence of 20 per million new-borns.
It is a result of a defect in anchoring between the epidermis and dermis, resulting in friction and skin fragility. Its
severity ranges frommild to lethal. There are three types- Epidermolysis bullosa simplex, junctional epidermol-
ysis bullosa and dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita is a chronic subepidermal
blistering disease associated with autoimmunity to type VII collagen within anchoring fibril structures that are
located at the dermoepidermal junction. No therapy is known and possibly employed so far. What is being
researched into is the bone marrow transplantation, and partial effects are achieved with the application of
grafts and especially daily care. However, despite everyday intense care provided to patients, deformities or
even general dystrophy are very common. Considering the severity of the manifestations, patients rarely live
longer than 30 years. They shall present a case of a patient whom they have been following for 19 years so far.
