From naevus flammeus simplex to Sturge-Weber and Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome

N

aevus flammeus is a benign vascular anomaly - a capillary malformation in the skin. It is almost always a birthmark; in

rare cases, it can develop in early childhood and ordinarily persist throughout adulthood. Port-wine stains appear most

often on the face but can appear anywhere on the body, particularly on the neck and upper trunk and upper extremities. Very

often they appear on the face, and affect both sides of the face symmetrically. Asymmetrically localized naevi flammei may

be associated with other conditions such as Sturge-Weber syndrome and Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome. It is only the naevus

flammeus medialis nuchae, occurring in some families in at least one family member in every generation, which may resolve

spontaneously. We shall present patients with naevus flammeus simplex and the related severe syndromes. Naevus flammeus

is a serious cosmetic, aesthetic, mental, and therapeutic problem. The patients affected require a sensitive approach shown by

their physician in cooperation with a psychologist. Psychotherapy is inevitable in most patients who are severely affected.
