Sternum

sternum is a flat bone at the anterior aspect of the thorax. It is also known as breastbone. It lies within the midline of the chest and features a ‘T’ shape. As a part of the bony thoracic wall, the sternum helps protect the interior thoracic viscera – like the guts, lungs and oesophagus. during this article, we shall check out the osteology of the sternum – its constituent parts, articulations, and clinical correlations. The sternum is often divided into three parts; the manubrium, body and bone. In children, these elements are joined by cartilage. The cartilage ossifies to bone during adulthood.
