Human immunodeficiency viral infection and purchased immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) may be a spectrum of conditions caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Following initial infection an individual might not notice any symptoms, or may experience a quick period of influenza-like illness. Typically, this is often followed by a protracted period with no symptoms. HIV is spread primarily by unprotected sex (including anal and oral sex), contaminated blood transfusions, hypodermic needles, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding. Some bodily fluids, like saliva, sweat and tears, don't transmit the virus. HIV may be a member of the group of viruses referred to as retroviruses. If the infection progresses, it interferes more with the system , increasing the danger of developing common infections like tuberculosis, also as other opportunistic infections, and tumors which are otherwise rare in people that have normal immune function. These late symptoms of infection are mentioned as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This stage is often also associated with unintended weight loss.
