Abstract:

Urban agricultural is increasingly considered to involve different forms of agricultural production both within cities and in peri-urban areas; such agriculture is highly diversified and can include food production, horticultural production as well as the more traditional forms of agriculture including productivist agriculture. We focus on food production in this presentation. These agricultures have to content with multiple stressors, including continued urbanization, the development of neo-rural population development in the peri-urban areas, competition from other sources of agricultural food production and increasingly the effects of climate change and variability. In this presentation, we discuss how urban agriculture and its food production has been able to adapt to these different stressors based on examples from our own research from Canada (the Toronto and Montreal areas), France (the Paris region) and Belgium (the Liège region). We discuss how different agricultures can adapt to these multiple stressors and suggest the roles of land use planning and strategic development planning for agriculture in contributing to such adaptation.
