Abstract:
Stroke is one of the main causes of death worldwide and a leading cause of permanent disability among adults in developed countries. In Brazil, the incidence of ischemic stroke varies from 105 to 137/100,000 inhabitants, and patients with stroke exhibit high prevalence rates of ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Some studies have shown that campaigns on television and in printed materials are good tools to improve the population’s awareness about stroke and the need to contact emergency services. The correct (and prompt) recognition of stroke signs has been just as crucial as the admission to a stroke service to the achievement of better results in stroke care, including a reduction in mortality and disability.
