Abstract:

The global prevalence of dementia is estimated to be 24 million. This is predicted to double every 20 years till 2040. Alzheimer disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia. AD is typically characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive functions. It starts in late middle age or old age. AD attacks nerves, brain cells and neurotransmitters. Due to the degenerative changes in brain cells, clumps of protein are formed and these are the B amyloid plaques. The plaques cause inflammation, oxidative stress and start to destroy connections between the nerve fibres leading to neurofibrilliary tangles. Problems of neurotransmitters lead to neuronal function in the brain and ultimately death of the neurone. Managing Alzheimer's with diet i.e. importance of good nutrition, a balanced diet, exercise, stress control, herbal remedies, etc will be presented in this paper. Specific role of vitamins is explained particularly for vitamin B12, vitamin D, vitamins E, C and beta-carotene. A low intake of these has been implicated in risk for dementia. Ayurvedic medicine is the traditional medicine science from India. The ayurvedic scriptures have references to age-associated memory loss, preventive care and therapeutic interventions. The use of several herbs for nervous system disorders, including memory loss typically seen in older adults has been highlighted. Making healthy food choices, keeping cholesterol and blood sugar levels normal to reduce the risk of Alzheimer disease has been highlighted. Recent Publications Patil R.S and Kaku, N.
