Abstract:
Necrotizing Otitis Externa (NOE) is an infection of the external auditory canal leading to an Osteomyelitis of the bone and surrounding soft tissue and to multiple abscess and cranial nerve palsies. The frequency of this life-threatening disease is increasing, and a shifting incidence has been noted with more sterile culture and fungal cases. Aspergillus serology and PCR are actually important tools in the diagnosis of this condition and many therapeutic procedures have been used and combined: antibiotics, antifungals, local treatment, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and surgery. In this session, we will summarize and discuss the most relevant clinical and therapeutic features of NOE on the basis of the most recent data in literature.
