Abstract:

Elderly patients are a growing and vulnerable group with increased perioperative and postoperative risk. (1) Number of surgical patients, who are older than 65 years old, is twice as high as young population in the USA. Forty percent of all surgeries and 50% of emergency surgeries are performed on elderly patients. Eighty percent of elderly patients are considered to be ASA III and above risk group. (2) With advancing age; anatomical, physiological and functional changes occur in organs and systems. These changes raise perioperative and postoperative complications in this patient group. Perioperative and postoperative mortality and morbidity depend on age, as well as on the type of surgery. (3, 4) Though a proper preoperative assessment reduces the likelihood of perioperative and postoperative complications. Risk assessment in elderly patients includes cardiac, respiratory, cognitive and evaluation of medications used. Anesthesiologists should focus on preventing potential complications in the preoperative and perioperative setting in order to improve the long term wellbeing and quality of survival of elderly patients.

Elif Erdogan Ongel, She is working as an anesthesiology and reanimation specialist in istanbul sancaktepe sehit Prof. Dr. Ilhan Varank training and research hospital. She got my anesthesiology and reanimation diploma from istanbul haseki training and research hospital. Also She trained intensive care fellowship for 2 years at istanbul university cerrahpasa medical school, and palliative care research fellowship for 14 months at M.D. Anderson cancer center, USA.
