Abstract:
Most HIV infected adolescents on ART at our center are those perinatally infected and now grown to adolescence. They are faced with multiple challenges in the form of incomplete disclosure of their status, loss of parents, dependance on reluctant caregivers, access to ART and the need to cope with their physical and psychosocial changes as they grow into adulthood saddled with a chronic and stigmatized infection. They have no or minimal access to adolescent friendly health care providers within the conventional health delivery services. My talk will encompass a brief summary of facts and figures and a sharing of experiences from working in the community and hospital with HIV infected adolescents. Strategies to optimize their health and well-being and the learnings from these interventions will be discussed.
