Abstract:
Ayurveda system of medicine has its own importance in the management of respiratory disorders. Chronic bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and emphysema are considered as chronic respiratory disorders. In emphysema there will be permanent dilation of alveolar sac along with dilation of bronchioles. On physical examination, emphysema patients show cylindrical chest or barrel shaped chest, increased intercostal space, prominent accessory respiratory muscles and resonant note on percussion. In chest x-ray PA view, the radiological findings are increased intercostal space increased translucency of Lung parenchyma, flattering of both hemidiaphragm and vertical heart. In Ayurveda use of disease specific drugs and farmulations pathyapathya prayoga, diet therapy, rasayana and ojaskara drugs and pranayama are advised. Drugs include katu tikta rasayukta, ushna, Vatakaphahara, bronchodilator, expectorant, decongestant, mucolytic, immunity booster, antibacterial, bactericidal, anti-infective and jivaniya drugs. The present paper highlights about the role of Ayurveda in the management of Emphysema of the lungs. Key words: Emphysema, Bronchodilator, Rasayana.
