Threats of Passive Fishing Activites on Sea Snake Enhydrina Schistosa (Daudin 1803) of Puducherry Coast, India
Passive fishing activities are most threats to Beaked sea snakes (Enhydrina schistosa) in Puducherry coastal region. Prawn trawling and boat seine nets are among the top most threats to Beaked sea snakes along 12 coastal villages of Puducherry region. In the present study, 234 numbers of Enhydrina schistosa species were found entangled in 316 trawling nets. In 63 boat seine nets around 103 sea snakes were found entangled. Total by-catch of the normal distribution (E. schistosa) skewed at range of 5-18 numbers and medium class recorded in up to 12 to 13 numbers. There is no previous study on E. schistose threats in Puducherry coast. Hence, the present study conducted on distribution, threats and conservation of Enhydrina schistosa in Puducherry region. The results concluded that a large number of sea snakes are threatened with prawn trawling and boat seine nets.
