Orphan drugs and rare diseases.
"Orphan drugs" are medicinal products intended for diagnosis, prevention or treatment of lifethreatening
or debilitating rare diseases. They are "orphans" because the pharmaceutical industry
has little interest under normal market conditions in developing and marketing drugs intended for
