Larvicidal Activity of Medicinal Plant Extracts Against Culex Quinquefasciatus Say and Aedes Aegypti L. Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae)
The aim of the present study was to assess the larvicidal activity of medicinal plant extracts against Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti larvae. Three solvents viz., hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol were used to prepare the extracts from shade dried leaves of five medicinal plants viz., Aegle marmelos, Limonia acidissima, Sphaeranthus indicus, Sphaeranthus amaranthoides and Chromolaena odorata. The results of larvicidal activity clearly showed that the hexane extract of L. acidissima was the most potent larvicide among five different plant extracts screened against both vector mosquitoes. The LC50 and LC90 values of L. acidissima hexane extract were 101.51, 313.56 ppm and 136.82, 325.07 ppm, respectively against Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ae. aegypti larvae. The hexane extract of L. acidissima could be used in integrated mosquito control programme.
